ABSTRACT
The new University of Manchester was formed on 1 October 2004 from UMIST (the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) and the Victoria University of Manchester. The ambition was to make the new university more than just the sum of its parts through a ‘step change’, guided by a determination to accept nothing from its precursor universities that did not represent best practice.
