ABSTRACT

Developing good equality and diversity policies is relatively straightforward, but embedding them in the culture and arrangement of an organisation, so that they make a difference to people’s lives, is quite a different matter. It was this challenge that the Leadership Foundation project at Cardiff University aimed to tackle. We sought to explore and develop strategies to enable the University to promote equality and diversity within all its policies, processes and ‘ways of doing things’. We drew upon both public sector ‘mainstreaming’ approaches to promoting equality and private sector human resource management approaches of ‘managing diversity’.
