ABSTRACT

The Aim Of This Chapter is to illustrate how the ‘embryonic capacity for historical thinking’ (H. Cooper 2002: 2) can be fostered with children in the Foundation Stage through a study of the popular topic of ‘Ourselves’. The teacher involved is a newly qualified teacher working in an early years unit in a school in a northern city, in particularly challenging circumstances. The chapter will outline her aims for the topic linked to Foundation Stage principles and planning requirements. Examples of planning and learning activities are included to illustrate the miriad of possibilities this topic has for developing children's historical knowledge, skills and understanding.
