ABSTRACT
The analysis of SOE’s activities in Romania divides into two episodes – the first, from 1938/39 to January/February 1941, when British nationals were forced to quit the country, and the second from December 1943 onwards, when a mission was sent to establish personal connection with the Romanian opposition. Ivor Porter’s admirable narrative of his experiences in Operation Autonomous obviates the necessity to cover that mission in this chapter and allows me to concentrate on the first, more inchoate, period. 1 Also, cooperation with French agencies – a complex story in itself – is omitted, for reasons of space.
