ABSTRACT
Taiwan as a society comprises many waves of migrants who have arrived from the Chinese mainland at different times. They have formed diverse ethnic groups and, historically, have often aligned with polities outside Taiwan to boost their domestic political position. Consequently, interventions by foreign polities have always played a pivotal role in Taiwan’s historical development.
