ABSTRACT

Peace settlements or formal negotiations traditionally do not take women’s experiences and situations into account. When called upon to oversee ceasefires, or the negotiations and implementation of peace accords, or postconflict reconstruction, the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations are responsible for ensuring that the principles of nondiscrimination apply. Efforts have to be made to include equal participation of women, so that women’s rights, needs, issues, views, and voices are not marginalized when negotiating peace accords, and in the political, economic, and social reconstruction of their countries.
