ABSTRACT
Ian Budge’s research programmes are framed by a democratic, utilitarian and interest aggregating perspective that is widely shared among his colleagues who study comparative political behavior and institutions. He departs from many of these colleagues, however, in his strong support for direct democracy as an alternative to our present representational regimes.
