ABSTRACT

This example of a framework to assist prioritisation was developed for young children who stammer or stutter. It originated as a way of organising the different treatment options in a training course for speech and language therapists (SLTs) rather than from a need to consider caseload management. However, several therapists saw the relevance of the training model to their clinical decision making and so the framework was developed

Stuttering is a low incidence problem and so many SLTs have little experience with this client group, leading to anxiety and low levels of confidence. Less experienced SLTs need to be clear about the boundaries of their competence and their role with this client group. SLTs learn direct and indirect treatment approaches in training at pre-qualification and postgraduate levels but may not see these put into practice.
