ABSTRACT

The actor and Quaker Paul Eddington once said that if you can get through life without actually seriously harming anyone then you are doing all right, and consequently his modest goal in life was to leave the Earth in no worse a state than he had found it. This, he observed, is rather more difficult than it might at first seem, and anyone who thinks otherwise has probably failed to appreciate the number of ways in which one’s life affects the lives of others.
