ABSTRACT

I did not claim that everything in Smith is reducible to this model, that there is nothing interesting in Smith outside the model, or even that Smith consciously saw himself as making successive applications of the model in his various works. My claim, rather, was that this model is at work in Smith’s descriptions, that once identified in TMS it can be seen elsewhere, and that it provided a unifying theme throughout Smith’s major extant work. I made one other claim: Smith’s model turns out to be surprisingly powerful, and, given recent investigations in several fields, it might enjoy the not inconsiderable feature of being approximately true.
