ABSTRACT
Students entering a distance education course for the first time face a transition to a mode of education which can be quite different to what they have experienced before. Nearly all education in schools takes place in classes taught by a teacher. The same is true of conventional post-secondary education. Most students new to distance education, therefore, have a great deal of experience of education in which both a teacher and fellow students are present in the classroom.
