ABSTRACT

In some ways it is problematic to have a chapter with a strong focus on technology in a book which emphasises the primacy of teaching and learning. However, while early uses of computer technology in the 1970s and 1980s had a very modest impact on university education, the advent of the internet in the 1990s and the growing and more robust web-based educational systems on offer in the 2000s have seen a significantly greater impact on the design, development and delivery of university programmes, both on-and off-campus. It is thus useful to consider how technology has impacted on the possibilities for distance education in less developed regions of the world.
