ABSTRACT

Prior to the 1996 Olympic Games Modern Pentathlon changed to a one-day format (youth competitions remain over two day). The order of the events is not set, although the running event must take place last. Recently the distance of the running and swimming events changed to bring the men’s and women’s distances into line. The running event consists of a 3,000 m cross country time trial where the competitors start at intervals based on their point totals after four events. The swimming event is a 200 m sprint where competitors compete in heats determined by their previous season’s best time. The shooting event includes 20 shots (40 s per shot) from a 4.5 mm air pistol at a distance of 10 m from the target. The fencing event is an epee one hit competition where all

m course of 12 obstacles, including a double and 2004 Olympic events were won with total point scores of 5,480 (men) and 5,448 (women).
