ABSTRACT

There is a general agreement that certain physiological attributes are a pre-requisite to success in the sport of soccer, and should thus form the basis of any battery of tests performed. Contributory attributes include; cardiorespiratory endurance, speed (linear), agility (multi-directional speed), speed endurance, strength and muscular power (Reilly, 1993: 371-372). The complex nature of the sport means that no single test exists which is capable of assessing all factors concurrently, and that several tests must usually be employed. Despite the large number of studies, which investigate the physical fitness of soccer players of all levels, there exist no agreed national or international battery of tests or associated performance standards.
