ABSTRACT

Based on a sample of businesses extracted from the 1997 Dun & Bradstreet Business Directory, this chapter examines the sectoral composition, size distribution, and geographic distribution of medium-sized and large Chinese businesses in Toronto, and compares them to the overall business sectors in the Toronto metropolitan economy. Accompanied by locational shifts, the Chinese ethnic economy has moved away from its traditional focus on consumer goods and services to one that covers nearly the whole array of industrial activities, and has gone beyond the enclave market and middleman status. The study elucidates the functional diversity as well as the structural and economic integration of the Chinese sub-economy in the overall Toronto metropolitan economy. It also underscores the macro changes in the world’s economic and international migration systems.
