ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Japanese studies of domestic Chinese politics in recent years. This review will introduce four types of Japanese studies on China concerning the one-party system – including the relationship between the party and the state, the party’s relationship with the People’s Liberation Army and the National People’s Congress, and the relationship between the party-state and society. After examining their general trends, I will also focus on the issues related to the one-party system and its sustainability. As a longtime observer of China and Chinese politics, and a person sharing such interests with other scholars, I have also recorded my observations of Chinese politics for 23 years in the monthly journal The Toa (East Asia).1
