ABSTRACT

This chapter mainly focuses on Japanese security perceptions of Australia. Through a critical survey of the Japan’s geo-strategic positions throughout history, it describes the evolution of how Japan has looked at Australia from the 1850s onwards. Both realistically and psychologically it examines the origins and developments of Japan’s views of the outside world. Viewing the emerging security agendas, the chapter also highlights the security roles Japan expects of Australia. On the basis of these analyses, it concludes that a reliable security partnership between Japan and Australia in the twentyfirst century is plausible.
