ABSTRACT

While overshadowed by the flourishing bilateral trade and investment linkages that have developed during the post-war period, defence and security1

have been important factors shaping Australia-Japan relations since the late nineteenth century. A salient feature of the Australia-Japan defence and security nexus has been the involvement of the great powers of the day: the British and the United States. The former were influential throughout much of the pre-World War II period before the collapse of empire, while the latter has had a particularly profound impact during the Cold War period and beyond.
