ABSTRACT

Americans tend to assume that Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Terry Morse, 1956) is the original in the longest running film series of cinema history (29 films spanning 50 years). The original Japanese film, Gojira (Ishiro Honda, 1954), was first seen in the United States in 2004. Morse’s Godzilla is actually a re-edited version of Honda’s Gojira. Morse inserts an American journalist (Raymond Burr) who accidentally stumbles on the mysterious disappearance of boats off the coast of Japan, caused by the monster Godzilla.
