ABSTRACT
For several decades, there has been a widespread perception that American-
based anthropologists dominate Japan anthropology – in access to funding,
in setting the research agenda, and in determining career patterns and
journal access. The 2002 JAWS meetings at Yale devoted an entire plenary
session to this issue, and it produced some strong opinions from the panel-
lists and membership.1
