ABSTRACT

Until recently, a running joke among terrorism experts was that the number of scholars studying terrorism far exceeded the actual number of terrorists. This was certainly true in the cases of the North American Weathermen and the German Rote Armee Fraktion. Today, with the prevalence of terrorism inspired by political Islam, the number of terrorists has risen substantially compared to the 1970s. Concomitantly, and not surprisingly since 9/11, the number of experts has also increased. In the current climate, the fear is such that we are now led to believe that the situation is reversed and that the terrorists outnumber the experts.
