ABSTRACT
This chapter will review the research evidence and the clinical concerns that underpin the rationale for separate inpatient services for women. Three examples of responses to these concerns are then given. The establishment and running of two women-only services, both located in inner London are described: a hospital ward and a crisis house for women located separately from any hospital. Third, the setting up of a policy on sexual assault in a psychiatric hospital with mixed-sex wards is described.
