ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on research undertaken by the University of Surrey and commissioned by the Further Education Unit; this report is organised on the following basis. Section 1 provides a general context to our work. There is an outline of the project approach, a short background note to our discussions with college staff and other interested parties, a brief summary of the features of the new system of National Vocational Qualifications and our initial delineation of the nature and scope of the change being brought about by the implementation of this new system. We do this by considering the implications of this change for colleges in the medium term.
