ABSTRACT

The first half of this chapter presents a review of current debates on the relationship between housing tenure and the basal determinants of the contemporary character of the class system. This is followed by a detailed case study of an area of inner city working class owner occupation in central Gateshead. The case study provides empirical material against which the argument reviewed in the first section may be set. In the conclusion I return to these arguments in the light of the empirical material presented in the case study.
