ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the main findings of the study and suggests a way in which they may be used to establish a framework for identifying the nature and scope of collection costs. This framework is presented in the hope that it will assist museums in predicting costs more accurately and therefore lay the foundation for more effective allocation of the resources assigned to collection care and management. Other practical applications of the study are also noted: The discussion is divided into four sections:

• cost categories • cost variables • cost projections • practical applications

COST CATEGORIES

Among factors for consideration are acquisition costs, and both direct and indirect costs of collection care.
