ABSTRACT

The discussion so far in this section has been dominated by interest in curatorial and professional grades. But to leave it at this would be to distort the picture. As museums become more complex, a greater sophistication of ability and understanding at all levels of museum work has, in turn, become essential. The word ‘professionalism’ means ‘with extreme competence’ and it follows that professionalism at all grades is a vital ingredient in modern museum provision. This is especially true of those staff who meet and deal with the public.
