ABSTRACT

In this chapter I want to make some comments about science, then about education, and finally to put these two sets of considerations together and see what implications they have for the way we teach science to young people. Though what I shall have to say about science and education seems to me rather straightforward and unexceptionable, I suspect that it will not be so for everyone who reads this book. I would hope that when I come to put them together and make some suggestions about the kind of science education which we should now be working towards, perhaps with our eyes on the year 2020, that what I have to say will seem more sensible than radical. We shall see.
