ABSTRACT

The penetration of chloride ion into hardened cement pastes has been studied by the authors during many years (Browne (1982), Colepardi (1970), Gjörv (1979), Midgley (1984), Page (1981) and Smolczyk (1984)). The diffusion of ions play an important role in the durability of concrete marine constructions. Piers, foundations and retaining walls in sea structures are generally made of Portland ecment concrete. The physical processes of concrete deterioration are associated with chemical reactions between components of sea water and the constituents of OPC. Under laboratory research conditions the concentration of chloride ion always has a constant value. However, it is unreasonable to apply the same conclusions to concrete structures directly exposed to sea water.
