ABSTRACT
Concrete structures are designed to provide long-term serviceability, safety and acceptable appearance. Designers and builders often assume that concrete is a maintenance free material and that its performance is constant with time. These assumptions have been challenged by failures observed in historic concrete structures. Examination of these structures shows that deterioration affects not only the surface but that decay sometimes reaches the inner mass of the concrete.
