ABSTRACT

Durable concrete should retain its required quality and serviceability with a minimum of maintenance throughout its design life. The permeation characteristics of the near surface of concrete, which affords both the chemical and physical resistance against the ingress of deleterious elements from the environment, have a major influence on the long term performance of the concrete structure.(2)

This paper deals with the permeability of the cover concrete to steel reinforcement in particular the intrinsic permeability (k) and its inferred quality. It does not at this stage deal with the relationship between the measured k value of insitu concrete that is of unknown composition or history. However the intention is to extend these procedures to that objective.
