ABSTRACT
I was pleased to receive an invitation some time ago from the Chairman of the organising committee of this Conference to deliver the first Keynote lecture at this important event. I had never been asked before to give any sort of talk with the general heading of ‘keynote’ but I was comforted by the thought that no title was required to me there and then. Another plus point was that whatever had to be in writing from me could wait until after the conference which, at that time, seemed a comforting distance away.
