ABSTRACT

The title ‘Decompression Illness’ is broad in its scope and thus represents the potential of what could be covered, but space requires that I am selective. Within this vast subject I wish to concentrate on three particular aspects. First, the definitions of the various decompression disorders need to be questioned. Consideration will then be given to clinical aspects and, as there is not time for a detailed scientific review, I will concentrate on research priorities in decompression illness. Finally, it is timely at this meeting to review the history and accomplishments of the Decompression Sickness Panel, a co-sponsor of this meeting and to look at its future.
