ABSTRACT

This paper describes the compressed air tunnelling that was carried out for construction of the three main stages of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway. Also covered is a description of the trial tunnels built prior to the main construction and which included research into the use of compressed air in Hong Kong. Data on the number of exposures to compressed air are given for various contracts. The number of incidences of decompression sickness events are described with a breakdown into Chinese and European workers.
