Introduction

Much of the recent study of language has focused upon spoken forms, though reading and writing have for a long time been an important part of many people’s experience of language, and of its learning. The first three articles in this section are mainly concerned with questions about the current moves towards widepread literacy throughout the world, and towards higher levels of literacy in countries where literacy levels are already high.
