ABSTRACT

This chapter, like many of the research projects I have been actively involved in, has appeared in many different guises. It has changed and developed as ideas have matured. The way this chapter has altered as it has developed mirrors the way in which I have always done research: one digs for further questions, not answers, and the final results of the research will usually differ very markedly from one’s initial research objectives. The alternative-that of working hypothesis, test, followed by validation or rejection-is altogether too simple a procedure to apply to a subject devoted to something as complex and unpredictable as the human past.
