ABSTRACT
After the report by Sir Ron Dearing entitled ‘The National Curriculum and its Assessment’ (1994) the government announced some significant changes to the system of national assessment in England and Wales. This chapter focuses on one of those changes, that is, the requirement for schools to report both the teachers’ assessments of their pupils and the pupils’ results in the national tests. The chapter will principally examine how this change will affect English at Key Stage 3.
