ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Recent years have witnessed a marked change in some UK local authorities’ perceptions of their role within Europe. While the phrase ‘Europeanization’ perhaps implies a far greater degree of cultural change than has occurred in most areas, there has undoubtedly been a growing awareness of the new challenges and opportunities which result from closer European integration and some authorities have undergone radical organizational and structural changes as part of a pro-active, corporate approach to maximizing the benefits which it offers.
