ABSTRACT
The arrival of AIDS has prompted much social research. In the early days of the epidemic the emphasis was, understandably, on gathering and publishing hasty findings to help inform policy-making and service delivery. By now more research that is both reflexive and theoretical has emerged. However, the development of the subject area has occurred over a time period in which the organisation of social research and the environment of the welfare marketplace into which it reports have also changed. Moreover, that change, to an increased emphasis on utilitarianism, has been in an opposite direction to the maturing trajectory of the AIDS social research agenda, which has recognised the strengths of alliance and reciprocity.
