ABSTRACT

There are, of course, numerous kinds of activities, apart from the arts, that take place outside of school hours. However, surprisingly little has been written about this aspect of schooling. One of the few comprehensive accounts is to be found in an informative volume by Andrews, Vernon and Walton (1996). They report that parents welcome all types of extra activities and see them not simply as pleasant adjuncts to schooling but as an integral part of their children’s general education.
