ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the involvement of children in family work when their parent presents with mental health problems. Although we are both clinical psychologists, we bring different perspectives to this issue including systemic approaches (Boscolo et al., 1987), communication theory (Pearce, 1989), and developmental and cognitive psychology (Bruner, 1990). We begin by reflecting on how children are commonly excluded from the theory and practice of therapy with parents presenting with mental health problems. We go on to describe an approach to involving children in the work with their parents, using a case example to connect our theoretical perspectives with practice. (The therapeutic work with this family was carried out by GF. Names and biographical details have been changed to ensure anonymity.)
