ABSTRACT

We shall examine these accident patterns, considering both the types of accidents that predominate at different ages, and the factors that seem to give rise to them. Data will be used to illustrate the influence of social, family and environmental factors and attention will also be given to factors intrinsic to the child (age, sex, ethnicity, stage of development and so on). The aim is to build an overall picture of accidents resulting in death or injury as a prelude to the following chapter which examines accident prevention strategies.
