ABSTRACT

In the last chapter we saw that simply increasing children’s knowledge about road safety does not seem to influence the way they behave when confronted with real traffic situations. Even approaches that do place more emphasis on behaviour, like the Green Cross Code, are taught verbally and the effectiveness of teaching is assessed by the extent to which children can recite it on demand. It is assumed that if children can do this, they will be able to turn what they recite into appropriate behaviour at the roadside.
