ABSTRACT
Some time ago, while driving through a heavily forested region of northern Wisconsin, I came into a huge area that had been laid waste by logging in the ninteenth century. It was nearly a century later, yet all that remained inside this mighty forest were countless stumps. The image was vivid: nature was wounded and the wound could not heal.
