ABSTRACT
Although the idea of genre is familiar to students of literature it is probably not so familiar to English and Welsh primary teachers. It refers to how different sorts of texts may be categorised. We have not been used to thinking in this way about reading and writing up to now, but thinking about genre provides a powerful way to plan for the development of reading and writing.
