ABSTRACT

The Construction Industry in Hong Kong had a manual worker labour force of approximately 83,500 in the first quarter of 1997. Of these, approximately 46,000 were employed in the public sector and 37,000 in the private sector. When the manual labour force is analysed by type of project the statistics are 58,107 employed in the building industry and 25,393 in the civil engineering industry. The figure for the overall labour force in Hong Kong in 1996 was 3,075,000 and the figure for manual workers in the construction industry amounted to 77,000.
