ABSTRACT

In 1903 Dr H. Nelson Jackson and his chauffeur Sewall K. Crocker made the first ever coast-to-coast crossing of the United States by car. They drove a brand new Winton automobile, and travelled from San Francisco to New York in sixty-three days (see Figure 7.1). Today one could drive it in four or five. Or one could hop on a plane, and be there in the day.
