ABSTRACT

There is more to the game of hockey than meets the eye, especially when the view is refracted through the lenses of 14 year olds. They know that the game has a content and form because of the coaching they receive. But they also know from their lived experiences that there is a deeper gamea complex, social relational affair both on and off the ice. Intuitively and cognitively they have knowledge that connects the game to wider cultural practices. In short, they are aware of what it takes to obtain status, honor or prestige, and, conversely, how it feels to be shamed or embarrassed.
