ABSTRACT

One way to gain information about the experiences of others is a simple case study approach of interviewing people and recording their comments. However, problems arise in validating those records, ensuring that they are accurate representations of what the people intended to say. Another problem involves developing a relationship in which the interviewees feel comfortable sharing their stories. This is a particular concern when dealing with public figures such as professional athletes who have learned to be very guarded. As jockey Danny Williams told me, he had kept his personal struggles to himself, not even including his mother or his girlfriend because “we were taught not to tell anyone. Keep it to yourself…You don’t tell anybody because if they tell someone else, it will hurt your career.”
