ABSTRACT

We will explore two questions in this chapter: what has been Maxine Greene’s impact on the field of American curriculum studies, and how can her sophisticated philosophical inquiries into human freedom serve to critique this field? The first question will be addressed through a carefully documented account of the direct and indirect ways her philosophical themes have guided curriculum study projects. The second question is more complex and requires a response that touches on the identity-the very heart and soul —of American curriculum studies. We begin by describing the general features of American curriculum studies before turning to the two questions that serve as the organizational frame for this chapter.
