ABSTRACT
This chapter examines karaoke singing in the United Kingdom. A phenomenon which has become virtually institutionalized in its country of origin, Japan, and the wider East and South-East Asian realms, efforts by makers and distributors of karaoke to market the activity further afield-in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, North America and South America for example-have met with variable lasting success and although the internationalization of karaoke is still on the agenda of the karaoke industry in Japan, it is now widely accepted that the most stable and lucrative markets as well as those which promise the greatest potential for future growth are still in East and South-East Asia. One reason for this may be the more complicated logistics of developing and distributing specialized karaoke systems and software for culturally and linguistically diverse markets far from home, such as in Europe for example, but ‘cultural’ and historical factors are also significant in assessing the adaptability of karaoke within a particular society or social context.
